Socotra is a remote, barely-developed kite destination — no schools, no rentals, no rescue, so bring all your own gear and ride with a guide. Two distinct wind regimes. The SW monsoon (roughly June–August, building from May) makes Socotra one of the windiest places on Earth: the north coast around Hadibu/Howlef blows ~25–40+ knots day and night (recorded ~80 kph sustained, extreme gusts), gusty and cross-shore, with chop and head-high+ waves — strictly advanced/expert. At Qalansiyah and Shoab the wind is cross-offshore and so violent that kites have reportedly burst; no safe downwind. The south coast (e.g. Mahfirhin) stays comparatively tame at ~15–20 kt in the same months but has murky shallows where sharks are reported. The NE season (Oct–April, the main tourist window) brings moderate 15–25 kt north-easterlies, calmer water and the only realistically beginner-friendly conditions: Detwah lagoon near Qalansiyah is flat and shallow; Ghubbah on the west end has small waves and forgiving cross-shore wind. Water is crystal-clear over sand, coral and reef — reef booties recommended; launches range from sandy beaches to rocky ground (Ras Irissel is rocky with little error margin). Hazards: sharp coral, big wind gradient/gusts, cross-offshore flow pushing you to sea, currents on exposed coasts, sharks in murky south-coast shallows, and total isolation (nearest real medical care is off-island). Access is by air to Socotra (Hadibu) airport — flights are limited and seasonal, usually via Abu Dhabi — then 4x4 to the spots. This is Yemen: verify current security advisories, entry permits and tour logistics before booking. Crowds are essentially nil. Best blend of strong-but-rideable wind plus scenery is shoulder-monsoon; flat-water learning is winter NE.
