About This Spot

Mui Ne (the Ham Tien beach strip) is Asia's most reliable winter kite destination. Main season runs November–April, peaking December–February when the NE monsoon delivers wind on roughly 80% of days. Expect 18–25 knots steady, gusting to 40 on the strongest January–March days; 9m and 12m are the workhorse kites, with 7m days in peak. Wind typically builds late morning (~10–11am), strongest in the afternoon, holding until evening. It blows cross-onshore in winter, so self-rescue drifts you back to land. May–October flips to lighter, less reliable SW/S summer wind (10–14kn), fine for lessons but not worth planning a trip around. Water state: glassy in the early morning, then increasingly choppy with a moderate-to-heavy shore break as wind fills in; rough chop and swell further out. Heavy swell days can throw overhead waves right at the shoreline. Shallow inshore (1–3m), warm year-round (26–30°C), so usually boardshorts/shorty. Skill level: workable for beginners but genuinely challenging — the shore break and chop make the learning curve steep ('learn here, ride anywhere'). Best for improving intermediates and up. Dozens of kite schools and stations line the several-km beach; launch/land from a school station where staff assist and you keep clear of beachgoers. Southern end has the most sand; northern sections are badly eroded. Hazards: powerful shore break that's hard to punch through, and a strong shoreline current that drags you downwind fast if you don't get out quickly — water-start promptly. Fishing lines and boats at the far southern end (don't ride too far downwind), litter on southern beaches, gusty conditions, and crowds at peak. Nearby alternatives: Suoi Nuoc (~15 min north, side-onshore, fewer crowds, powerful waves — intermediate+) and Malibu/Ganh Beach across the cape (big sandy launch, well-spaced waves, smoother wind, too wavy for beginners).
