El Yaque

About This Spot

El Yaque is a small, kite/windsurf-dedicated beach town on the south coast of Isla Margarita, just east of the airport, and one of the most wind-reliable spots in the Caribbean. Trade winds blow side-shore from the left (E/ENE), so launching, landing and self-rescue are straightforward and you stay parallel to the beach. Typical strength is 15-30 knots. Windiest and most reliable season is roughly February-June, with February-April near-daily; October-January is also good but with occasional light days, while August-September is the weakest stretch. Classic daily rhythm: light-to-moderate mornings building through the day - blowing by midday, peak/epic around 15:00, easing late afternoon. Afternoons can get gusty, more so close to shore than further out. Water is warm year-round (~28C, air 27-33C) so boardshorts/bikini only. Water state at the main beach is flat-to-choppy: a wide ~400m shallow, sandy strip means it's relatively flat and stands-up-able close in (good for learning and a forgiving crash zone), turning to chop as wind builds; sand gets stirred up in strong wind. Suits beginners through advanced - several established kite schools are based here, and the steady, side-shore, no-real-current setup is beginner-friendly, while the consistent strong afternoons keep freestylers and freeriders happy. For genuinely butter-flat freestyle/freeride water, day-trip by boat (~20 min) to Isla Coche or do the downwinder, where it's flatter but lighter and more offshore (go with a school/rescue boat). Hazards: gusty, shifty afternoon wind near the beach; very crowded water and beach in high season (shared with windsurfers - watch right-of-way); shallow sandbar at low water; sea urchins and shells around any rocky patches, so wear shoes when rigging. No significant reef or strong current at the main beach. Note Venezuela's broader travel-safety and logistics situation - most kiters arrive on package/school trips. Direct walk-on beach access from the town's posadas.
