Open-Atlantic wave/freeride spot on Uruguay's Rocha coast, beside the resort town of La Pedrera. Season runs roughly September–April; statistically the windiest, warmest window is November–February, though local guides rate Jan–Mar and Sep–Dec as the strongest stretches. Expect wind on ~3–5 days/week in summer (fewer off-season); long-term data shows a high count of usable days (12kt+) but a modest average around 9–10kt, so come quiver-ready and willing to wait for systems. The reliable workhorse is the SE 'sudestada' (also E and NE in summer), which blows onshore/side-on and builds chop and Atlantic swell. N/NW winds are offshore here — they clean up the waves but blow riders out to sea, so they're for confident riders only. Water state: this is NOT a flat-water spot. Playa del Barco is deep, with real waves, shorebreak and chop — it's prized by surfers for its size and power. That makes it best suited to intermediate-to-advanced kiters comfortable in waves and self-rescue. Beginners and freestyle/flat-water seekers should instead use the region's lagoons (Laguna Garzón, Laguna José Ignacio, Laguna de Rocha), which are shallow, flat and school-friendly. Launch & access: wide sand beach reached by road from La Pedrera town; space to rig, no developed kite infrastructure on the sand itself. Around the cape, Playa del Desplayado is calmer and shallower but is studded with rocks — only enter on small days and time the sets. Hazards: rocks/reef at the point, the rusting remains of the Cathay VIII shipwreck off Playa del Barco, powerful shorebreak and swell, offshore N/NW wind, and heavy beach crowds in peak summer (Jan). There's no organized kite station, so check current local rules and ride with a buddy.
