About This Spot
A classic barrier-island setup like a warm-water Cape Hatteras: the Laguna Madre bay (west/lee side) gives mirror-flat, knee-to-waist-deep water for miles, while the Gulf of Mexico beach (east side) offers small-to-medium beach-break waves a short walk away. The dominant wind is SE/SSE side-to-side-onshore on the bay, thermally reinforced and most reliable in the afternoon. Season: cross-checked sources agree the prime window is March–July plus a fall window of mid-October–December. Spring (Mar–May) is the standout—powered 18–25 kt, frequent strong-wind days. Summer (Jun–Jul) is the most consistent for days-on-water but often lighter/thermal (15–20 kt), great for learners, foiling and light-wind freestyle. Fall and winter fronts bring the strongest, gustier wind and the best Gulf swell, but need a wetsuit (water ~19°C in Dec–Jan vs ~30°C mid-summer). Sept is the dead month (hurricane season, lightest wind). Water & skill: South Flats / North Flats on the Laguna are butter-flat and shallow—ideal beginner and freestyle terrain, with boat/jetski schools (Air Padre, Prokite, Windsurf Inc.) teaching in waist-deep water. Intermediates and up cross to the Gulf or The Jetties (near 5100 Gulf Blvd) for waves and downwinders. Suits all levels; genuinely one of the best US learning spots. Access: sandy beach launches, roadside parking off Padre Blvd; Brownsville/SPI International ~30 min. Schools and kite repair on the bayfront. Hazards: offshore (W) wind on the bay is manageable because you can wade back upwind, but never go solo offshore. The Gulf has shore/rip current and messy close-outs on big hurricane swell—keep clear of the jetty rocks. Watch boat traffic and channels in the Laguna, shallow seagrass/oyster on extreme low water, summer crowds, and stinging jellyfish/Portuguese man-o-war on the Gulf side. Spring/fall fronts can be gusty and shifty.
