About This Spot
Shinnecock Bay is a large, shallow estuary on Long Island's South Fork, behind the Dune Road barrier island in Hampton Bays/Southampton (~2–2.5 hrs east of NYC). It's a flat-water, beginner-to-intermediate playground: the bay is so shallow that you can ride a mile offshore in knee- to waist-deep water, making it an excellent place to learn and to practice tricks without swell. Because the shoreline is curved across a 9,000-acre bay, you can almost always find a stretch where the wind blows side-shore, and there's ample room to schlog upwind. Wind: best in the shoulder seasons — roughly March–June and September–November — when frontal systems bring stronger, more consistent W/NW/SW wind; September and October are statistically the windiest, with cleaner cold-front NW days. Summer relies on the SW afternoon sea breeze, which often tops out in the mid-teens (a 12m kite works into the low 20s, sweet spot ~16–17 kt), so summer can be light and inconsistent. Prevailing direction is SW/S; NW is offshore-ish from the bayside and can mean gusty, shifty air plus the risk of being blown toward open water/channels, so favor side-shore W/SW. Launch & access: kiters rig along Dune Road, near the Tiana Beach / Tiana Bayside area in Hampton Bays; town beaches (Tiana, Ponquogue) require seasonal parking permits and lifeguarded-beach rules apply in summer. Old Ponquogue Bridge Marine Park has a boat ramp nearby. Hazards: shallow flats with seagrass beds, clam/oyster bottom and the occasional submerged hazard at low water; boat traffic, marked channels and the Shinnecock Inlet current to the east (stay well clear of the inlet); offshore wind components; and summer beach/swimmer crowds with permit/parking enforcement. Crowds of kiters are minimal — often only one or two riders, so plan to be self-sufficient and bring a buddy.
