About This Spot

Sherman Island is the Bay Area's premier summer kite spot, sitting in the Sacramento River Delta where the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers meet. It works on reliable thermal wind: as the inland Central Valley heats up, air is drawn through the delta from the cooler coast, producing prevailing WSW–SW (cross-/onshore) wind. Season runs roughly April–October, most consistent May–August, with low-20s mph (high teens to low 20s knots) common all summer; afternoons typically build, and the first day of a cool-down can spike into the high-20s/low-30s mph. Some riders rate Sept–Oct for steady ~16+ mph. A 12m is the workhorse kite for most riders. Warm fresh water (no salt, no reef). Water state is tide-driven: flood tide gives flatter water good for cruising and freestyle; ebb tide brings chop and clean swells better for jumping. Tidal current is strong—consult a tide chart and locals before launching. Best for intermediate to advanced riders. Wind is directly onshore at the main launch and it gets crowded, so confident launch/landing and kite control in gusty, congested conditions are essential; beginners should book a lesson or boat session with a local school (Edge Kiteboarding and others operate here). Launch & access: the main spots are managed by the Rio Vista Windsports Association along Sherman Island East Levee Road—the second parking area in the Sacramento County Park (primary kite launch) and the Access Pit just outside the park gate (advanced only). Rig in the meadow and use dedicated paths to the beach; do not park on the levee (forbidden/fragile). Day-use ~$5, dry camping ~$10/night, no running water or services—bring everything. Hazards: strong tidal current, submerged debris/obstacles that catch fins and foils, ship and barge traffic in the channel (you won't hear them), a blackberry/vegetation barrier at the County Park, and the crowded 'Playpen' (windsurfers, swimmers, kids)—emergency exit only. Respect right-of-way; access depends on good behavior.
