A remote, uncrowded slice of the central Texas Gulf Coast on the Matagorda Peninsula, near the mouth of the Colorado River. Two very different rides exist here: the open Gulf beach (chop and shorebreak/swell) and the flatter, shallower water of Matagorda/East Matagorda Bay behind the peninsula. Wind: Prevailing summer wind is the SE sea breeze, side-onshore to onshore on the SW–NE-running Gulf beach (good for self-rescue). The Port O'Connor/Matagorda Bay station averages ~11 kt year-round. Most reliable season is roughly March–September, peaking April–August when the thermal sea breeze fills daily, similar to (if slightly less bankable than) Corpus Christi to the south. Winter delivers strong but gusty, cold N/NW winds behind frontal passages—powerful but less consistent and offshore on the Gulf side (dangerous; avoid). Water & skill: Gulf side is chop with shorebreak—intermediate and up. The bay side is flatter and shallow, friendlier for progression, but reaching clean bay water usually means a kayak/boat shuttle or a long wade. No dedicated kite school operates on-site; come self-sufficient. Launch & access: Matagorda Beach is a drive-on beach (Matagorda County vehicle permit ~$10/yr); 23 miles of the east beach are vehicle-accessible, the western 35 miles by watercraft only. Main entrance, Jetty Park, and Matagorda Bay Nature Park have parking/restrooms; kayak rentals nearby. Soft sand bogs non-4x4 vehicles; dune driving banned. Hazards: Strong rip currents and swift tidal flow near the jetties, the Colorado River mouth, and Mitchell's Cut—stay well clear; do not launch/land beside the jetties. Beach-driving traffic, limited services, no lifeguards in most areas, typical Gulf sharks/jellyfish, and summer-weekend beachgoer crowds at the main entrance. Best for self-reliant intermediates wanting space over amenities.
