About This Spot
The crown jewel of the Columbia River Gorge and arguably the best summer thermal kiting in the US. Wind is generated by the pressure gradient between the wet, cool coast and hot inland desert funneling through the canyon, so the classic kiteable wind is WESTERLY (W/SW/NW) blowing UP-river, side-on to side-shore at the launches. Season runs roughly May–September; it blows over 20 kt on ~190 days a year, with typical sessions 17–30 kt and big heat-wave days pushing 30–35+ kt. Best reliability is July–August (warm air ~75–85F, water ~70F by late July, 4/3 or shorty). May–June is stronger, gustier and cold (full 4/3+booties); Sept tapers. Main launches sit on the Oregon (south) shore: the Event Site (Hood River Sandbar) is the hub — grassy rigging, an extensive sandbar that stays waist/thigh deep far upwind so you can ride out and drift/walk back, making it genuinely beginner-friendly; it's also the world's only free public kitepark (wakestyle features). Crowds are heavy here — the densest concentration of kiters/wingers/windsurfers in the country. The Spit, just NE, is more exposed with cleaner, stronger wind but choppier water, a rocky launch and little standing depth — intermediate/advanced only, rig a size down. The Hook (far west) is shallow, onshore and gusty (Wells Island shadow), used mostly for lessons/winging. Water is fresh and ranges from near-shore flat/waist-deep to knee-to-thigh chop out in the channel; this is a flatwater/chop freestyle and big-air venue, not a wave spot. Hazards are serious and current-driven: powerful Columbia current plus Hood River confluence creates undertows, steep drop-offs and a notorious 'black hole' off the outer sandbar edge — drownings have occurred. An underpowered kiter can be swept downwind/under the Hood River Bridge toward Washington; the bridge pilings are deadly. 500-ft barges run the shipping channel — stay upwind of the sandbar and out of the lane. N/S winds are gusty and unreliable. Parking ~$7 (oversize $15).
