About This Spot

A flat-water and shallow-lagoon spot at Fort De Soto Park near St. Petersburg/Tierra Verde (Pinellas County), and one of central Florida's best beginner-to-intermediate venues. Wind is seasonal: the reliable window is November–April, driven by winter cold fronts (frontal, gusty, less predictable) plus thermal sea breezes that fill in best during spring and fall. Summer is mostly too light, so don't travel here June–August expecting wind. Typical rideable days run ~10–20 kn. The park has two main launches with opposite wind windows, so check direction before driving out. East (Big) Beach is the all-levels choice: a big sandy launch, knee- to waist-deep (2–4 ft) clear flat water, and the smoothest wind on E and S; it works NE-E-SE-S(-SW). NE/N winds blow over land and are gustier. North Beach works N-NW-W-SW and suits experienced riders—it's a ~half-mile walk from the lot to the northern tip, with a flat shallow lagoon by the sandbar island but a ~100-yard channel along the beach that gets choppy at high tide with fast tidal current. Water is generally flat to light chop; winter cold fronts can build small swell/shorebreak on the Gulf side off the pass. Hazards: strong tidal currents (especially in/outside the lagoon and in the channel), deep water past the bar, low tide that can drain the lagoon too shallow to ride, oyster shells and shells (wear booties), and fire ants in the rigging grass (wear shoes). Crowds of beachgoers are common—this is a busy state park. Regulations are strictly enforced by rangers: launch/land only in designated kite zones, stay out of buoyed swim areas, no riding in the lagoons west/north of the main lot (ocean/Gulf side only at North Beach), everyone off the beach before sundown, no alcohol. Paid entry (~$5 + small toll). When tide and wind don't line up, nearby Skyway Beach is the common fallback.
