About This Spot
Corpus Christi is one of the most consistently windy kite destinations in the US, with riders logging well over 200+ rideable days a year. Prime season is roughly mid-March through July: north frontal winds kick off in March, then a reliable thermal S/SE side- to side-onshore sea breeze takes over by April, building through the afternoon and peaking around 3pm at ~17-21 mph (12-20 kt, 8-14m kite weather). August-September are the least consistent (hurricane-season lulls), and Oct-Feb is hit-or-miss frontal wind best left to locals. This is a multi-launch bay area, so you need a car to chase the wind direction. Water is mostly flat to light chop in the bay—warm (60s°F early spring, mid-80s by summer; shorty or boardshorts most of the season). Key spots: Wildcat Park (Portland) is the windiest on SE thermals, with grassy launch, ample parking and a self-landing hook—flat-to-choppy waist-deep water good for all levels. Grassy Point ('Carpets') offers buttery flatwater channels for freestyle (marina parking pass). Bird Island Basin in Padre Island National Seashore is the classic beginner flatwater spot (entry/camping fee, gets busy). JP Luby and Bob Hall Pier/Padre Balli are oceanside for waves on strong SE but get crowded. Fish Pass works best on NW wind. Great for beginners and progression thanks to shallow, flat, uncrowded water (often only a handful of kiters out). Hazards: shell- and mud-bottom shallows—wear booties; current and jetties at the channel/oceanside spots; some onshore-component winds at certain launches; Oso Bay has water-quality concerns. Respect national-seashore rules and parking-pass systems. Overall a reliable, affordable, learner-friendly travel spot for spring/early-summer wind.
