About This Spot

The most consistent wind destination on the US East Coast and a global kiteboarding pilgrimage — roughly 70 miles of barrier-island shoreline on Hatteras Island (Outer Banks). Its signature feature is the two-water setup: the shallow, waist-deep Pamlico Sound on the west side for flat-water riding, with the Atlantic and its swell/waves a short walk east over the dunes. Both work depending on wind direction. Wind: rideable year-round (20+ days/month), with the prime window March–November. Spring delivers a good mix of SW and NE; summer is dominated by SW thermals (often 15–25 kt, foil-friendly on lighter days, July statistically the windiest); fall hurricane season brings the strongest, gnarliest NE at 25–40 kt for big-air. Mostly frontal/thermal wind, so 8–16 m covers it. Average ~8 kt baseline with frequent stronger periods. Water & skill: The Sound (Canadian Hole/Haulover, Kite Point, Salvo Day Use Area, the Slick) offers butter-flat, shallow standing-depth water — ideal for beginners and freestyle/wakestyle progression. Ocean side (South Side near Hatteras ferry docks, Rodanthe-Salvo downwinders) gives chop to overhead waves for intermediate/advanced wave riders. World-class downwinders (e.g. Ramp 34 to Avon Pier, Ferry Docks to Frisco). Launch & access: Multiple NPS-designated launches with sandy beaches and easy soundside entry; Real Watersports in Waves is the main hub/school. Ride side-on shore only. Hazards: Power lines near several road-side launches (Kite Point, Canadian Hole) — mind overhead obstacles on launch/land. NEVER ride offshore (west) winds on the sound — you'll be blown to open water. Piers (Avon, Frisco) and pilings, summer beach crowds and evening kiter congestion, shifting sandbars, strong Atlantic current/shorebreak ocean-side, and rapid frontal wind shifts.
