Bolivar Flats

About This Spot

A huge tidal sand flat at the southwest tip of Bolivar Peninsula, at the base of the North Jetty guarding the mouth of Galveston Bay, on the upper Texas Gulf Coast just across the ferry from Galveston. Reached via Rettilon Rd off TX-87 near Port Bolivar/Crystal Beach. Wind: prevailing SE/ESE sea breeze, side- to side-onshore on the Gulf-facing beach. Best, most reliable season is spring, roughly March–June, when strong SE sea breeze plus late-season cold fronts deliver frequent 15–25 kt days. July–August is the lightest stretch — a daily thermal breeze, but often only 10–15 kt. Sept–Nov is a good secondary window when cold fronts arrive; note frontal N/NW wind is offshore on the Gulf beach (blows you out to sea — do not ride it there). Winter is cold-front roulette. Water: at low/mid tide the flats give large areas of shallow, flat, waist-deep water — friendly for beginners, foiling and freestyle — while the open Gulf beachfront serves up chop and small wind/shore swell for intermediates. Vast space, sandy bottom with some shell/soft mud at dead low. Skill: beginner-to-intermediate on the flats; intermediate on the Gulf chop. Hazards demand awareness. Launch & access: drive-on beach with a $10 Galveston County beach permit; big open sand to set up. IMPORTANT: this is the Houston Audubon Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary / Globally Important Bird Area. A vehicle barrier closes the core flats to cars, and hundreds of thousands of roosting/feeding shorebirds use it — keep clear of bird flocks and posted closures, don't kite over roosting birds, stay off vegetated dunes. Other hazards: North Jetty rocks; strong tidal/channel current near the jetty and bay mouth with heavy ship traffic; remote (self-rescue, no patrol); seasonal jellyfish/sharks. Crowds are low and low-key. Verify current sanctuary rules locally before riding.
