Teague Bay

About This Spot

Teague Bay sits on the north shore of St. Croix's East End, the island's main kite zone. A long barrier reef runs offshore, so the lagoon inside is shallow and largely protected: expect flat to lightly-choppy water near the beach building to more texture as you reach out toward the reef line — good for freeride, beginners progressing past lessons, and foiling, less so for big wave riding. Wind is trade-driven from the E/ESE most of the year, turning more NE in winter. Two seasons deliver: the winter 'Christmas winds' (Nov–Feb, roughly NE 15–20 kt) and the strongest, most reliable stretch in spring–summer (Apr–Aug), with June–July the windiest and the working season tapering off by mid-August. Typical sailable days run 15–20 kt, occasionally 20–25 kt; Sep–Oct is the lull (hurricane season). Side-shore to side-on direction makes for safe launches — not offshore. Launch is the sandy beach near Duggan's Reef / The Reef condos, just west of the St. Croix Yacht Club; reach it via East End Road (Rte 82) east of Christiansted, turning in at Duggan's Reef. Parking is easy and crowds are minimal — you'll often have it to yourself or with a handful of locals. Hazards: shallow reef, scattered rocks and seagrass/grassy patches inside the bay (mind fins/foils and downwind drift toward the reef), and the usual reef-cut current near gaps. The area lies within the St. Croix East End Marine Park (Recreational Zone) — respect zoning, mooring and no-fishing-method rules and stay clear of swimmers/snorkelers. Local schools (Kite St. Croix, Leading Edge) operate on-island, mainly Oct–May, and are the best source for day-of conditions. Bring your own gear; no rental shop on the beach. Best for intermediates who want warm-water cruising; verify the forecast (Windguru/Windfinder St. Croix) before committing a travel day.
