About This Spot
Djerba's main kite zone is the huge, shallow lagoon on the north of the island, a few km from Houmt Souk and ~10–25 min by shuttle from Djerba-Zarzis airport and the hotel zone. Schools (KiteWorldWide, Les Dauphins, local centers) run from sandy beaches on what's variously called the Flamingo Lagoon / Ras Rmel / "Smile Beach" — a ~30 km² flatwater basin. Season runs roughly March–November. June–August is the most reliable, with thermal wind almost daily: it typically fills in around midday/early afternoon (often 1pm) and builds through the afternoon, frequently holding into the evening — call it ~90% windy days in high summer. Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct) add stronger synoptic systems and can deliver the best/strongest sessions but are less consistent day to day. Wind is mostly thermal and moderate: commonly 12–20 kt, occasionally 25–30 kt; direction is generally E/NE in summer and more W in winter, blowing side- to cross-shore at the lagoon (good, safe angles — not straight offshore at the main launch). Water is the draw: butter-flat and shallow over a soft sand bottom across most of the lagoon, standing depth in many areas, with no real current. This makes it outstanding for beginners and for freestyle/wakestyle progression. Stronger wind brings light chop; for waves/swell you ride outside the lagoon on the open sea. Hazards: the biggest nuisance is seaweed, which collects on light-wind/low-water days, tangles in lines and makes a dropped kite hard to relaunch — beginners should be cautious on weak days. Tidal range matters: at low tide the lagoon gets very shallow and weedy, while stronger wind/higher water improves conditions. Other notes: large kites are useful in summer thermals, school zones near launches can be crowded, and you generally need a shuttle to reach the best flat areas. Warm water Jun–Sep (boardshorts); shorty or 3/2 wetsuit Oct–May.
