About This Spot

Djerba's main kite zone is the vast, shallow lagoon along the island's north/northeast shore (Smile Beach / Ras Rmel-Flamingo Island area, ~30+ km²), with the better-known SE option being the Sidi Mahrez / Les Dauphins lagoon near Midoun. Both share the same draw: huge stretches of butter-flat, waist-deep water over soft sand, no current, and standing depth almost everywhere — about as forgiving as a flat-water spot gets. Season runs roughly March–November. From mid-April to mid-October a reliable thermal wind kicks in most days around 13:00 and builds to 15–22 kt (occasionally 30) through the afternoon; locals/schools quote ~90% windy days in peak summer. Off-season (Nov–March) relies on weather systems: still rideable stretches of 15–25 kt but more gaps and lulls (~60–70% reliability). Prevailing direction is E/NE, side-onshore to sideshore — safe, blowing you back to land rather than out to sea. Water is mirror-flat up to ~15 kt and lightly chopped above that; depth shifts with tide and wind (roughly 0.5–2 m), so scout your patch before riding. Ideal for beginners and improvers, and the flat sections make it a freestyle/wakestyle playground — advanced riders cross to the old fort/castle area for the slickest water. Kit: 9–12 m covers most summer days; bring a 7 m for windy afternoons. Boardshorts in Jun–Sep; shorty or 3/2 spring and autumn. Hazards: the big one is floating seaweed in summer, worst on low-water + light-wind days — it tangles lines and weights the kite for relaunch (less of an issue above 20 kt, which floods the lagoon). Otherwise low-risk: no real current, no reef, gentle launches. Watch shallow sandbars at low tide, occasional crowds at school zones near Houmt Souk hotels, and seasonal flamingos/protected areas at Ras Rmel — give wildlife space. ~10–25 min from Djerba airport (DJE).
