About This Spot

Tobago's flagship kite spot, on the sandy spit/lagoon at the island's SW tip beside the Bon Accord (Nylon Pool) lagoon. The offshore Buccoo Reef acts as a breakwater, creating a large shallow, turquoise lagoon of mostly flat to lightly-choppy water that's ideal for cruising, freeride and freestyle; rideable swell/waves only break ~1km out at the reef. Wind: NE trade winds. Best season is roughly mid-December to April, most consistent Jan–March, with 12–20kn averages and gusts to 25–30kn on stronger days. Winds hold into June (often the windiest, ~25kn easterlies); July–November is the lighter/low season. Note the catch: when wind is N it blows cross-/offshore here (stable but it pushes you out to sea), while E wind is more cross-on but noticeably gusty. A boat rescue is usually on hand and a school operates on the beach, which keeps the offshore aspect manageable. Skill level: best for intermediate and advanced who can stay upwind. Beginners do learn here (shallow, warm, schools/IKO instruction) but should be wary of offshore wind, a busy beach and reef bottom — easiest for novices Aug–Dec at low tide when water is smoothest and shallowest. Launch & access: easy sandy launch right off Pigeon Point Heritage Park, short drive from ANR Robinson Airport; rental car handy. There is a park entrance fee (a few USD). Facilities, restaurants and gear/repair nearby. Hazards: cross-offshore N wind (don't ride downwind tired), coral/reef and shallow sand bottom, strong crowds in peak season with swimmers, boats and jet-skis sharing the water, and gusty/squally easterlies. Water/air are warm year-round (~28–30°C), no wetsuit needed. Confirm any current kiting zones/rules with the local school.
