Nai Yang Beach

About This Spot

Nai Yang is Phuket's main rainy-season (southwest-monsoon) kite spot, on the island's northwest coast inside Sirinat National Park, just south of the airport. WIND: SW monsoon blows roughly May–October, most reliable June–September. It's side-onshore, typically 12–25 knots on 8–12m kites. Mornings are often lighter; afternoon sea breeze and squalls build it up, and wind can turn gusty and unpredictable when monsoon storm cells pass through, so check Windguru/Windfinder and watch for fast-moving rain bands. WATER: a wide sand beach fronts a large, shallow flat lagoon/sandbar that runs ~500m out at low tide — knee-to-waist deep, ideal flatwater for beginners, freeriding and foiling. Beyond the lagoon the reef produces 1–2m wind swell/waves on the outside (better to the left/north end), giving intermediates and wave riders something to play with. Warm water 28–30°C year-round; boardies and a lycra are enough, no wetsuit. SKILL: genuinely beginner-friendly thanks to the shallow standing-depth lagoon and lots of space, but the gusty, stormy character of monsoon wind means real beginners should take lessons; intermediate/advanced get the most out of it. SCHOOL/ACCESS: Kiteboarding Asia (IKO, operating here since 2003, seasonal May–Oct) is the established school/rental, with easy beach launch and plenty of room to rig. HAZARDS: shallow reef, coral and rocks beyond the lagoon (low-tide hazard), mooring buoys, longtail/tour boats, swimmers and the occasional tree/obstacle on the beach. Being right next to Phuket International Airport, keep kites low and respect any flight/park restrictions — it's a protected national-park beach. Crowds are modest compared with high-season Rawai, so beaches are quiet when rigging. Bottom line: a safe, spacious, warm-water flatwater spot worth traveling for if you come in the June–September monsoon window and accept that wind is steady-ish but squally.
