About This Spot
Jomtien is the main kite beach of the Pattaya area, a 6 km sandy strip on the Gulf of Thailand about 10 km south of Pattaya city. It's the most accessible kite destination from Bangkok (~2.5–3 hr drive; U-Tapao airport ~30 min) and home to several established schools (Kiteboarding Asia, Clubloongchat/Blue Lagoon and others), so it's a strong choice for lessons, foiling and casual freeride rather than a bucket-list wind destination. Season runs roughly November–June; July–August can also deliver. Two distinct wind regimes: from mid-Nov to mid-Jan the NE monsoon brings side- to side-offshore wind around 12–25 kt (avg ~15 kt), often building thermally in the afternoon, with high tides and deeper water near shore. From late Jan into June the wind swings to the W/SW, lighter but onshore, and tides drop to waist-deep flats — easier and safer for beginners. July–Aug onshore SW can blow 18–25 kt but is squally (rainy season May–Oct, with October typically dead). Bring 8–12 m; light-wind sessions are common. Water is flat to choppy with a large shallow zone (roughly Feb–Sept), ideal for learning and freestyle/foil — not a wave spot. Launch is from the beach with a short water-entry; space can be tight. Jomtien is designated motor-free for water sports, so no jet-skis/speedboats in the kite zone, but the beach is busy with swimmers (buoyed swim areas), sun-loungers and tourists in high season — pick the quieter south end and stay clear of bathers. Main cautions: the early-season side-offshore NE component (don't drift out, check before going), gusty/light thermal days, shallow tidal flats at low water, and crowds. Overall a reliable, beginner-friendly, well-serviced spot with moderate wind quality.
