Paje Beach

About This Spot

Paje, on Zanzibar's southeast coast, is one of the world's premier flat-water kite spots and a major teaching hub (Kite Centre, Aquaholics, ION Club, B4Kitesurf and many others line the beach). A coral reef ~1.5 km offshore shelters a wide, sandy lagoon, so the water inside is flat to lightly choppy with no real swell — ideal for beginners and freestyle/freeride. The reef itself offers waves (1–3.5 m on swell) for advanced wave riders at higher tide. Two reliable trade-wind seasons. Kuzi (S to SE) runs roughly mid-June to October — the stronger, most consistent season, most days 15–18 kts, occasionally up to ~25–30 kts. Kaskazi (N/NE) runs mid-December to mid-March, slightly lighter, ~12–18 kts. Both are cross-/side-shore on this east-facing beach (not offshore). Wind is typically lighter in the morning and builds after midday. Typical kites 9–12 m. April–May and November are unreliable/rainy shoulder months. Tides dominate everything here — range is large. Low tide drains the inner lagoon to shin/knee-deep flat water over sand for hundreds of metres (best for lessons and freestyle); high tide brings chest-deep water with mild chop and kickers, pushes riders toward the beach/palms, and opens downwinders and the outer reef. Check the tide chart before rigging. Launch/access: easy, walkable from any beachfront school or hotel; wide beach, plenty of room. Hazards: sea urchins and patches of sharp coral/rock at low tide (booties recommended); large seaweed (algae) farms splitting the lagoon — visible and crossable at mid/high tide, but avoid riding over them and respect the farmers' lines; strong tidal currents in channels and around the reef at higher tide; sharp reef offshore; the beach gets crowded with kiters and schools in peak season, and beach walkers/seaweed workers are present. Standard Zanzibar etiquette/respect for the local Muslim community applies.
