About This Spot

Kalpitiya is Sri Lanka's main kite hub: a 2km+ long, ~800m wide shallow lagoon on a sand spit between the Indian Ocean and the Puttalam lagoon system, billed as one of the world's best places to learn. Two distinct wind seasons. SUMMER (mid-May to Sept/early-Oct) is the prime, firing period: SW monsoon delivers strong, very consistent 20-30kt cranking nearly 24h/day. June-Aug is peak (25+ wind days/month, often 9m or smaller). WINTER (mid-Dec to Feb/early-Mar) is lighter and thermal: calm offshore-ish NW mornings building midday to a steady 12-20kt afternoon breeze (12-14m kites); Jan-Feb most reliable (~25 wind days), Dec/Mar hit-and-miss. Note: full-moon periods often kill wind for several days in both seasons. Water: the lagoon is flat and waist-to-chest deep (~0.5-2m), ideal for beginners and freestyle, though wind can be gusty here. Ocean side is choppy with reef waves and brownish water. Skill level: excellent for beginners/intermediates in the lagoon; advanced riders head to boat/tuk-tuk spots — Vella Island/Magic Spot (~45min boat north via Dutch Bay, butter-flat 2.5km, downwinders), Dream Spot, Donkey Point (20min, waves), Ippantivu, and Kappalady lagoon (~20min south, very consistent but small). A Venturi effect through the Palk Strait channel nearly doubles wind speed toward Vella. Launch & access: wide sand beach on the lagoon's west shore where most schools cluster; resorts offer free transfers. Hazards: murky water, muddy bottom with sharp shells and sea urchins (wear booties), occasional reports of snakes; gusty lagoon wind; crowded at peak (sometimes ~30 kites, but space is ample); outer-spot trips need a safety/rescue boat. Offshore-component wind at some spots means always ride with support.
