About This Spot

Sri Lanka's kite capital: a narrow sand peninsula in the Puttalam district splitting shallow lagoons from the Indian Ocean. Two seasons. The main summer season runs mid-May to late September/October, driven by the SW monsoon — strong, steady 20–30kt cross/cross-onshore wind blowing nearly 24h a day; June–August is peak (25+ windy days/month, typical 9m). The winter season runs mid-December to late February with lighter NW thermal wind (12–20kt), best Jan–Feb. Winter is less reliable: thermals die if it clouds over or rains, and morning is often calm with the wind building afternoon to sunset. April and November are unpredictable shoulder months. Expect wind to drop for a few days around the full moon. The main lagoon (~800m x 2km+, ~1.5m deepest, much of it waist-/chest-deep) is flat to lightly chopped, brownish with a soft mud/shell bottom — ideal beginner and freeride water, and the base for most schools/lessons. Booties recommended (sharp shells/sea urchins). Access is an easy 10–15min tuk-tuk from accommodation. More advanced spots are boat/tuk-tuk trips: Vella Island ('Magic Spot', ~45min boat) offers butter-flat water and long downwinders but strong wind, current and remoteness — go with a safety boat. Dream Spot (~20min boat, Dutch Bay sandbar) and Donkey Point (near the lagoon) mix flat lagoon and ocean waves for intermediate/advanced. Kappalady lagoon (~15km south) is quieter, flat, ~15-kiter cap. Hazards: crowds (30–40+ kites on the main lagoon in peak season), gusty lagoon wind, shallow obstacles, strong currents and offshore-tending wind at the outer/island spots, and brownish low-visibility water in summer. Suits beginners (lagoon) through advanced (islands/waves).
