About This Spot

Pozo Izquierdo is one of the windiest spots in Europe and the trade-wind capital of Gran Canaria, world-famous as a PWA wave-windsurfing venue. Wind is NE (the Alisios), blowing side-onshore. Peak season is May–Sept (best Jun–Aug) with almost-daily 20–35+ kt; windsurfers rig 3.4–4.2, kiters are typically on 7–9 m and smaller. Winter (Dec–Apr) still blows but lighter (15–30 kt) and less reliably, with bigger Atlantic ground swell; when the wind drops or backs more northerly, riders move to southern spots (Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Playa de Burras). The water is never flat: chop plus a right-hand wave break — small/punchy in summer, large in winter. Conditions work best at mid–high tide; low tide exposes extensive volcanic rock. Advanced/expert only. You must hold a confident upwind line, as being swept downwind puts you onto rocks. Expect strong, gusty wind, a powerful shorebreak at high tide, medium-to-strong current, a rocky/stone entry and exit, and a volcanic reef seabed. Access is via the GC-1, exit Vecindario–Pozo Izquierdo; windsurf/kite centres and rentals (e.g. Pozowinds) sit roughly 30 m from the beach. Important: the main Pozo bay is effectively a windsurf reserve and kitesurfing is restricted/prohibited there — kiters generally launch from Salinas de Tenefé just south or Vargas just to the north, and may need a permit/membership, so check current local rules first. Crowds are heavy and windsurf-dominated in summer.
