Costa Teguise (Las Cucharas / Los Charcos)

Costa Teguise is a resort on Lanzarote's NE coast best known as a world-class windsurf bay (Playa de las Cucharas), but it doubles as a tide- and skill-demanding kite spot for those who know it. Wind is the reliable NE trade, blowing sideshore-from-the-left. Best season is April–October, with the cranking months June–August often 20–30 kn; spring/autumn average force 4+ on roughly 80% of days and the wider area sees ~300+ windy days/year. November–February is less consistent and gustier but still rideable, with bigger groundswell. Water/skill differs sharply by beach. The Las Cucharas horseshoe bay is glassy-flat inside (peninsula and breakwaters block swell), but it is a packed windsurf zone where kiting is restricted/discouraged — a marked kite area exists at the south end, otherwise launch elsewhere. The true kite spot is Los Charcos, just south: a shallow reef lagoon that's flat-to-choppy with clean reef waves breaking outside the exit. It is reserved for advanced riders — onshore wind is very gusty near the shore, the bottom is rocky slabs/reef that dry out at low tide, and the launch is a narrow sandy slot. Ride mid-to-high tide; at low tide the basin empties and reef becomes a real hazard. Risks: sharp reef and rocks, strong gusty acceleration off the land, limited rescue if a kite goes down, and crowded water shared with windsurfers. Beginners and most intermediates should not learn here — head 25 km NW to Famara, Lanzarote's main beginner/intermediate kite beach with schools, open sand and no rocks. Access is easy: Costa Teguise town amenities, ~15 km from Arrecife (ACE) airport, beach launches. Bring booties and respect the local kite/windsurf zoning.
