About This Spot

Costa Teguise on Lanzarote's east coast is driven by the NE trade winds (alisios), which blow cross-onshore here. Most reliable April–September, with 15+ knots roughly 80% of the time in season; peak is July–August, regularly 20–30 knots in the afternoons. Winter (Nov–Feb) is lighter, less consistent and carries more N/NW swell. Air/water are mild year-round (water ~17°C Jan to ~25°C Aug). The famous bay here, Playa de las Cucharas, is a 600m horseshoe surrounded by hotels and is overwhelmingly a WINDSURF spot — choppy, often crowded, with a roped-off swimmer zone and a rock groyne (~50m) flanking a launch causeway only ~30m wide. Kiting in the bay itself is effectively not welcome/space-limited; if the wind angle is off, getting out past the rock wall is tricky. Dedicated kiters use Los Charcos, just south — a small, very flat tidal basin/lagoon with a narrow entrance, fed by NE/sideshore wind. It is ADVANCED ONLY: wind near shore is very gusty, the entry has rocky slabs, and a reef with a clean breaking wave sits right at the exit. Best at mid-to-high tide; at low tide the basin nearly drains and the reef is exposed and dangerous. Rescue is limited and a downed kite is often unrecoverable. Skill: not a learner spot. Beginners/improvers should head to Famara (wide sandy beach, more forgiving) on the NW coast. Costa Teguise suits experienced freeride/wave kiters comfortable with gusty winds, reef and tide timing. Hazards: reef and breaking waves at Los Charcos exit, rocks/rocky bottom, strong low-tide drainage, gusty onshore gradient near shore, busy windsurf/swimmer traffic and swim ropes at Las Cucharas, limited rescue. Check tides and local rules before rigging.
