Orient Bay

About This Spot

Orient Bay (Baie Orientale) is St. Martin's premier kite spot, a ~3 km Atlantic-facing bay on the island's northeast (French) side. WIND: Trade-wind reliability runs the December–July dry season, when easterly trades blow most days and nights. Direction is E/ENE, working as onshore to side-on (cross-onshore), which blows riders safely back to the beach. Strength averages ~13 kts year-round (great for foiling/wingfoiling); the Dec–April peak brings steadier 15–20+ kts, and good days reach 20–25 kts. Best riding is typically morning until ~11am and again from ~3pm. Aug–Nov is the weakest/least reliable window (hurricane season). WATER: Mostly flat-to-chop close in, with more swell and real waves outside near the reef/islets. Ride upwind toward Caye Verte (Green Cay) for a turquoise, butter-flat lagoon playground (turtles and rays). SKILL: Best for independent intermediate-to-advanced freeriders; schools require ~IKO Level 3 / FFVL green to ride solo. Beginners are taught here but the calmer nearby Le Galion lagoon suits learning better. LAUNCH/ACCESS: Easy beach access; many riders rig on the grassy parking lot beside the windsurf/kite schools (GoKiteSurfing, SXM Kiteschool, Wind-Adventures, Tropical-Ride). HAZARDS: A zoned 80 m swim area — you must launch/ride outside the yellow buoys and stay off the swim zone; very busy beach (Orient is a famous nudist beach); boats and jet skis in the bay; reef and bigger waves on the barrier to the south (~1 km right) and behind Caye Verte; scattered islets. Onshore wind makes self-rescue easy, but crowds and boat traffic are the main concern. Warm water (25–30°C) year-round.
