South Frigate Bay

About This Spot

Caribbean-facing beach on the narrow Frigate Bay isthmus, southeast of Basseterre. Two beaches share the strip: North Frigate Bay fronts the Atlantic (more wind, chop and waves), while South Frigate Bay opens onto the calmer, warmer Caribbean Sea with notably flatter water—the side most useful for learning, freeride and flat-water cruising. Wind: steady NE trades (NNE/NE/ENE/E). Season runs roughly November–June, with the dry season December–April/May the most reliable; riders report consistent 18–22 kt days. June–August is lighter and overlaps Atlantic hurricane season, so windless spells and storm risk increase. Because the south beach faces SW/W, the E/NE trades blow cross- to offshore here—great for flat water but a real safety issue: don't ride out far without a downwind safety plan, and lean on the local school's rescue boat. The Atlantic north beach gets side-on trades (safer self-rescue) but choppier water and waves. Water & level: flat to light chop on the south side suits beginners (with instruction) and intermediates; the overall bay's mix of calm and choppy sections rewards those with some experience. White-sand beach gives plenty of room to rig, launch and land. Access & facilities: easy—~5 km from Robert L. Bradshaw airport/Basseterre, parking, showers, toilets, beach bars, hotels and restaurants on the strip. IKO instruction, rentals and gear repair via local operators (Beach Addiction / St. Kitts Watersports on Frigate Bay Road). Hazards: scattered reefs (clear water, generally visible and avoidable); offshore wind component on the Caribbean side; swimmers, boats and busy beach-bar crowds in season; sun/heat year-round. Stay clear of swimming zones when launching.
