About This Spot
Qatar's flagship kite spot on the country's northern tip, ~90 km / 1 hr north of Doha and Hamad International Airport, now home to the Fuwairit Kite Beach (FKB) resort and its Discover Qatar–run kite school. The headline feature is a large, shallow, flatwater lagoon opening to the Persian Gulf — butter-flat to light chop inside, making it excellent for beginners, freestyle progression, foil and wingfoil. It suits all levels; the protected lagoon is forgiving for first-timers while outside offers more open water and chop for advanced riders. Wind: one of the world's longest seasons. Reliable from November through June, with the most consistent thermals/Shamal patterns. Typical winds 15–25 kt, predominantly N/NW/NE (side-onshore — safe, blows you back to the beach). Early-mid winter (Nov–Feb) is steadiest; the summer Shamal (around June) brings stronger, gustier wind up to ~30–35 kt. July–October are the lightest, least reliable months and very hot/humid. Winds can be gusty given the desert/coastal terrain, so size conservatively. Launch & access: take Shamal Road to Exit 79, signed for Fuwairit; the final stretch is a sandy track but passable by normal car. Wide sandy beach with plenty of rigging space; resort offers shuttles, gear, rescue and lessons. Tide matters — the lagoon is best near high tide; at low tide shallow sand/rock sections are exposed. Hazards: low rocky outcrops and sandy-rocky patches on parts of the shoreline and seabed (watch footing and downwind drift at low water); gusty/offshore-component days when wind swings more E or W; growing crowds at the resort during peak weekends/holidays. As a managed resort beach, expect access fees/registration and school zoning. No significant current or reef-break swell — main risks are rocks and gusts, not water state.
