Boquerón

About This Spot

Boquerón sits on Puerto Rico's far southwest corner, in Cabo Rojo, on a wide bay that opens to the west. Trade winds blow E–SE from roughly November through July, strongest and most consistent December–February (commonly 15–25 kt) and lighter/more thermal April–August; September–October are the dead months. Important: this is the leeward west coast, so the prevailing easterlies arrive cross- to offshore here. Wind inside Boquerón Bay tends to be lighter and gustier than the reliably-cross-shore north and south coasts, and the cleanest sessions come on a SE/S shift or an afternoon sea breeze rather than straight trades. Water is the draw: the sheltered bay is flat and warm, building chop as you head out past the protection. That makes it a light-wind, flat-water playground best for foiling, freestyle and improving riders. True beginners should be cautious — the dominant wind blows off the land toward open water (Mona Passage), so a downwind self-rescue heads out to sea, not back to the beach; ride with support or a boat and check your gear. Launch from Balneario de Boquerón, the public beach in town: easy road access, parking, restrooms, food, and the lively Boquerón village nearby. Hazards: the offshore/side-offshore wind direction is the main concern, plus shallow coral patches and seagrass, mangrove cays in the bay, and heavy swimmer, boat and jet-ski traffic on weekends and holidays (it's a popular family balneario) — go early or rig away from the crowd. For more reliable side-shore wind, many riders shift to nearby Combate or Bahía Sucia (Playuela) just south, or La Parguera further down the south coast. Overall a scenic, mellow flat-water spot rather than a guaranteed-wind destination.
