About This Spot

Peniche is a peninsula on Portugal's Oeste/Centro coast best known as the country's surf capital; kiting happens on the beaches flanking the headland, picked by wind direction. The workhorse wind is the Nortada (N/NW), driven by the Atlantic-vs-interior thermal gradient. It runs strongest spring through autumn, most reliably May–September (typically 15–25 kt, gusting higher), with autumn/winter delivering fewer but bigger, swell-heavy days. Note Peniche has NO lagoon thermal of its own, so it's less consistent than Óbidos Lagoon 30 min south — expect flat/no-wind gaps between sessions; check Windguru (Peniche & Baleal) before committing. Spots by wind: Baleal Bay / Bar do Bruno works on S–W wind (cross-onshore, beach break, shares water with surfers). Gamboa and the long north coast toward Óbidos Lagoon need N wind — watch rocks at low tide and surfers near town; the open north beaches are remote, side-shore and for experienced riders. Supertubos (south side) handles N or S but the N is gusty and OFFSHORE there — risky, advanced only, and it's a world-class surf reef so kiting is poorly tolerated. Water state is ocean chop with waves/swell almost everywhere — this is a wave/freeride venue, not flatwater. Suits confident intermediates and advanced wave riders; genuine beginners should learn at Óbidos Lagoon (flat, thermal N wind), where most Peniche schools take lessons. Launches are sandy beaches with car parking; Lisbon airport ~1h, rental car recommended. Hazards: crowded surf lineups (yield to surfers), rocks/reef at low tide, beach breaks, gusty offshore wind on the south side, and strong Atlantic currents/shore dump on big-swell days. Cold water year-round (15–19°C peak), 3/2–4/3 wetsuit needed. Crucially, in July–August kitesurfing is banned in designated swimming zones, so usable space shrinks in peak summer — ride the bay edges or head to the lagoon.
