About This Spot
Meia Praia is a long (~4 km) south-facing sandy beach running east from Lagos marina toward the Alvor estuary. It's a deep-water, open spot with room to spread out — quite different from the shallow Alvor lagoon nearby. The wind here splits sharply by season, and the season you pick decides the spot's whole character. Winter (roughly Oct–Mar) is the prime kite window. South, SE and W winds blow side-onshore at 15–25+ kt and push clean S/SE groundswell straight onto the beach, giving genuinely good, organized wave-riding that's rare on this coast. These are the safe, onshore-component sessions and the reason wave riders come. Water is choppy to proper waves; not flat. Summer (May–Sep) is dominated by the Nortada — a N/NW thermal that is OFFSHORE/cross-offshore here. It can produce glassy, flat water but blows you out to sea: do NOT ride without boat support, a downwind self-rescue plan, and ideally a school/rescue boat. This is for confident advanced riders only; most safe daytime summer kiting in the area happens at the Alvor lagoon (15 min away — shallow, flat, onshore, beginner-friendly), not at Meia Praia. Skill: intermediate to advanced. Beginners should learn at the lagoon, not here. Launch & access: ~3 km / 10 min from Lagos centre via N125 toward Portimão, turning off after the marina bridge to the Meia Praia signs; free parking at the western end. Rig and launch from the western end near Bar Quim toward the estuary, where the beach is least developed. Hazards: kite launch/landing is prohibited in the sunbed/concession zones that cover much of the beach — use the western/estuary end. Strong tidal currents near the river mouth, summer offshore wind, and busy swimmer/beach crowds in peak season. Respect local rules and any school flags.
