Wide, open Atlantic beach on the sandy peninsula south of the Sado estuary, just south of Tróia. It's a flat, dune-backed strand (Praia da Comporta / Praia do Carvalhal) with masses of room to rig — not a sheltered lagoon despite some marketing, though shallow sandbar pools form near the estuary mouth at low water. WIND: Driven by the summer nortada (N/NW), which lands here side-onshore to onshore — forgiving launch and ride angles. Thermals build through the afternoon (often filling in late morning, holding to sunset). Season runs ~April–October; most reliable June–September, but it sits in a wind shadow relative to the harder west-coast spots and is typically moderate (commonly ~12–18 kn, light-to-medium) rather than nuking, so check the forecast before committing. Off-season SW frontal systems bring stronger, gustier wind and real swell. WATER: Summer is mostly flat to light chop near shore; with any Atlantic swell you get shorebreak and rideable waves (it picks up NW/SW swell, a touch bigger than Tróia but not powerful). So: flat-ish in summer thermals, wave/shorebreak when swell runs. SKILL: The big open beach and side-on wind suit beginners and intermediates on flatter days; off-season swell days are for advanced wave riders. Note there's no established dedicated kite school on the beach (surf schools cluster at Carvalhal), so come self-sufficient. LAUNCH/ACCESS: Drive from Setúbal via the Tróia ferry/peninsula or A2/IP1–N253; park at a beach access and walk over soft sand. Big, uncrowded launch outside peak weeks. HAZARDS: Atlantic shorebreak and rip currents, especially with swell; cold Atlantic water (3/2 summer, 4/3–5/4 off-season); no kite rescue — self-rescue required. This is a chic, busy summer destination — expect sunbathers and lifeguarded swim zones in Jul–Aug where kiting is restricted; set up away from foot traffic. Some wind directions go side-offshore (caution), small fishing boats near the estuary, and gusty/frontal conditions off-season.
