About This Spot

Burgos sits on the windy northwest tip of Luzon, Ilocos Norte, on the same Amihan-blasted coast as the better-known Bangui Bay windmills (~10 km NE) and Kingfisher/Pagudpud (~20 km NE). Season: NE monsoon (Amihan), roughly Oct/Nov–Mar/Apr, most reliable Dec–Feb. Typical wind 18–25 kt, often 25–35 kt at the windier nearby reefs; coastal mountains and the wind-farm ridge create a venturi that boosts and gusts the flow (commonly +10–15 kt). Summer (Habagat, May–Sep) is largely unworkable. Wind direction: NE–ENE. It runs side- to side-offshore on the west/NW-facing Burgos beaches, so check the exact orientation of your launch — a genuine offshore-wind/self-rescue risk exists on truly west-facing sections. The established launches at Bangui Bay and Kingfisher sit more side-shore. Water: open South China Sea swell and chop on the exposed Burgos coast; flatter, more protected water inside Bangui Bay near the river mouth/windmills, plus a reef break off Pagudpud. Expect real waves, not a flat lagoon. Skill: solid intermediate to advanced. Strong, gusty, often-overpowering wind, waves and remote rescue make it a poor beginner choice — bring smaller kites than the average forecast suggests. Launch/access: along the national highway, ~1.5–2 hr (80 km) from Laoag International Airport, near Cape Bojeador Lighthouse and Kapurpurawan. Burgos's own beaches (e.g. Bayog/Saoit) are scenic but largely rocky/pebbly with sharp stones — poor for launching; most kiters base at Kingfisher or Bangui Bay and ride this stretch on downwinders. Hazards: sharp rock/reef shoreline and shorebreak, strong gusty venturi wind, offshore component on some beaches, current, big outer-reef swell, and very few/no kite schools or rescue — be self-sufficient. Crowds are essentially nil.
