About This Spot

Thermal desert spot inside the Paracas National Reserve, ~3.5–4 hrs south of Lima. The main launch is The Point / Kangaroo Kite Shack on the bay, a huge sandy beach with tons of rigging room, free parking, schools, rescue jetski, showers and food on site. Season: it's a reliable thermal wind machine. Best and most consistent Oct–Feb, with the broader season running Oct–end of Apr; locals claim rideable wind ~300 days/yr. Nov–Mar (austral summer) is peak — 17–24 kt average, gusting 26–30 kt once or twice a week, 5–6 ridable days/week, 9–12m weather. May–Sep is the lull (winter): cooler air/water, fewer crowds, roughly 2–3 good days/week, ~50% chance of usable wind. June–July are the weakest months. Daily pattern: mornings are light/southerly; the thermal fills in around 11:30–13:00 and pumps until 17:00–18:00, very steady. Wind funnels between two big sand dunes (Venturi effect), so it strengthens through the afternoon. Direction is roughly south / side-shore along the bay. Note: Windguru and other models underread this micro-climate — add ~2 kt to forecasts/live readings. Water: the bay is shallow and flat-to-light-chop near shore (flatter the lighter the wind), deeper out — good for upwind and freestyle. Minimal swell/waves inside the bay. Level: genuinely all-levels. Shallow flat water makes it strong for beginners/lessons; gusty afternoons and occasional sandstorm days suit intermediate+. Hazards: it's a protected reserve — bird/wildlife zones where riding is banned, and you must give lesson students space. Strong-wind days kick up sandstorms (gear/eye hassle, experienced riders only). Weekends get busier (15–30 riders) vs near-empty weekdays. Stronger nearby alternatives (El Playón, Laguna Grande) lie 20–40 min away.
