About This Spot

Oman's premier summer kite destination, a desert island ~15 km off the Sharqiyah coast (ferry from Shannah/Shana'a). The draw is the SW summer monsoon (Khareef): from roughly June to September the wind is exceptionally reliable, blowing day and night, steady from the S/SSW/SW at 20–45 knots and frequently nuking 30–40+ kt in the July–August peak. May and September are the shoulder months with lighter, less certain 20–30 kt — better for bigger kites. Outside the monsoon (Oct–April) it's a different, unreliable place: occasional lighter N/W 'winter' wind, not a travel-worthy season. The classic combo is one short drive (≈20 min) between two coasts: huge flat, shallow turquoise lagoons on the sheltered WEST side (around Sur Masirah, Ghashar/Ghab area, plus camps like Majali Beach Camp) for flat-water freeride/freestyle and beginners-to-intermediate; and Indian Ocean WAVES/swell on the EAST side (Haql is the mellower wave spot; Amq, Maglah, Khasit are for experienced wave riders). Launches are broad sandy beaches with vast space; crowds are low (it's remote, mostly camps/kite-trip groups, not a packed beach). Skill level: the flat lagoons suit improving riders, but the sheer wind strength means it rewards anyone with at least solid intermediate kite control — true beginners should ride only the lightest shoulder days with a school. HAZARDS: wind can turn cross-/offshore on the west lagoons (notably around Sur Masirah) and carry you out to sea — check direction and don't ride alone; scattered rocks/reef offshore and on the east-coast wave breaks; strong tidal current in places; large tidal range exposing muddy sabkha flats. The island is a major loggerhead turtle nesting ground (peak ~April–Oct) — beaches are protected, so avoid nesting zones and follow local/guide rules. Bring everything: limited services, patchy phone signal, ferry can be cancelled in rough seas. Temps a pleasant 24–38°C while the mainland bakes.
