About This Spot

Brouwersdam is a ~6.5 km dam between Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen, separating the North Sea (west) from the Grevelingenmeer lake (east). The North Sea beach is the real spot. Season runs roughly April–October; spring and autumn (and Jan–Feb for the hardcore) are windiest, while high summer can go flat for a week-plus during hot high-pressure spells (notably late July to mid-September). When it works it's typically 10–20 kt; over the year it's kiteable a solid share of days. Best/safe directions are SW through W to NW and N (onshore to side-onshore on the sea beach); S–SE is offshore — avoid unless expert. Wind is fairly steady and clean off the open sea. Water state depends on tide: at low tide there's ~300 m of shallow flat-to-lightly-chopped water (great for beginners and freestyle); at high tide it gets deeper fast and choppy, with short soft 0.5–1 m waves, and proper (if feeble) waves only in stormy W–NW conditions since offshore sandbars kill most swell. Suits beginners (low tide) up to intermediate/advanced freeriders and wave dabblers. Launch: wide sandy beach with ample space, free parking on the dam, and the Natural High / Beachclub Zee kite school offering showers, lockers and rental. The official kite zone is the southern stretch (Natural High down to the 'De Kou'/De Kous pavilion), bounded by yellow buoys — the swimmer area by the pavilion is off-limits to kites. The Grevelingenmeer (lake) side gives flatter water in some winds but kiting there is largely not officially permitted (sometimes tolerated). Hazards: strong tidal current and fast-deepening water at high tide, crowds on good days (kiters, windsurfers, landboarders, swimmers), shells on the sand bottom, and the offshore S–SE wind trap. Cold North Sea water (~10°C April to ~20°C August) means a wetsuit most of the year.
