About This Spot

Lüderitz is a remote, expert-level wind machine on Namibia's Benguela coast, best known for the man-made speed channel that hosts the Lüderitz Speed Challenge (kite speed records over 55 knots). This is not a learning or cruising destination — it suits advanced and pro riders chasing flat-water speed and big wind, not progressing intermediates. Wind: prevailing south to south-southwest cross/side-shore trade wind driven by the coastal thermal gradient. The season runs roughly September–April (southern spring/summer), with the most consistent and powerful days in October–November and again in January. In peak season the wind is extremely reliable and often blows 25–45 knots, typically building through midday into the afternoon. Small kites (7–9m, sometimes less) are the norm; on classic days it overpowers most riders. Water & spots: three distinct zones. The purpose-built speed channel is glass-flat over a narrow 500–800m course but is reserved/managed during the competition. The 'Second Lagoon' offers flat-to-light-chop bump-and-jump riding and is the main free-ride launch. The open ocean/bay side is choppy with swell and far more committing. Launches are off sand and grass; expect minimal to no infrastructure — no restaurants, toilets, showers or kite shop, so bring everything and rent a car. Hazards: the water is genuinely cold year-round due to Benguela upwelling — wear a proper wetsuit (booties/hood on cold days). Wind can be ferociously strong and gusty in spots like Donkey/Donkergat Bay; do not ride alone, as there is no dedicated rescue service and the coast is isolated. Watch for strong wind against current/chop on the bay side, offshore-angle risk away from the lagoons, and remoteness (medical help and recovery are far away). Crowds are minimal outside the competition window, when the speed channel and surrounds are busy with pros and access may be restricted. Fog and cool mornings are common before the wind fills in.
