About This Spot

Tofo (Praia do Tofo) is an Indian-Ocean beach break on Mozambique's southern coast, ~22 km east of Inhambane town. It's a laid-back, kite-plus-diving destination rather than a wind machine: usable but not bullet-proof. Two seasons drive the wind. The dry winter (May–Oct) brings the SE trades (locally 'Kusi') — the strongest, most reliable spell, typically 15–25 kt and best in Aug–Sep, blowing cross-onshore (safe direction). The warm summer (roughly Nov–Mar) adds thermal NE/E breezes that can deliver good days but are lighter and patchier; many days sit in the marginal 10–15 kt range, so bring big kites/foil-friendly gear and don't bank on every day. Statistically windy but moderate average strength — expect a mix of epic and zero days. Water: the main beach has a sandbar that creates a flatter, friendlier patch on the inside (best at lower/mid tide), with chop and open-ocean swell outside, plus a quality right-hand point break for those who ride waves. So it's flat-ish inside / chop-and-swell outside, and tidal. Skill level: a school (Kitesurf Tofo, IKO-certified, next to Peri-Peri Divers) makes it learnable on the wide sand and inside flats, but the open beach, shore break, tides and waves make solid intermediate skills valuable on bigger days; advanced riders get wave/strapless play. Launch & access: long sandy main beach with a large launch/landing zone and parking; fly into Inhambane (via Joburg/Maputo) — a rental car/4x4 is recommended as public transport is poor and the sand access is rough. Hazards: shore break and tidal current, rocks/reef near the points, dive and fishing boats launching off the same beach, and abundant marine life — whale sharks and mantas year-round, humpback whales May–Oct — so keep clear and watch for boat traffic. Crowds are low. Confirm any local kiting rules/permits with the school on arrival.
