About This Spot

Wide, open Atlantic beach break ~25 km south of Essaouira, the quieter and more wave-oriented sibling of the city beach. Wind season runs April–October on the Portuguese trade wind / thermal (locally the 'Alizée'), blowing predominantly N to NNE — side-shore to cross-onshore along this NNE–SSW coastline, so it pushes you back to the beach rather than out to sea. Peak is June–August, when afternoon thermals reliably hit 20–30+ kt (kite a 7–9m on a strong day); April–May and September–October are lighter and gustier, better for learning or larger kites. Mornings are often calm with wind filling in by early afternoon. Winter (Nov–Mar) is unreliable but uncrowded. Beware the easterly 'Levant/Chergui': when it blows it's dead offshore here — do not launch. Water is open ocean: chop plus consistent Atlantic swell and a punchy beach break, with a reef-break section in front of the old Hotel Marabout. It works best in smaller swell — bigger sets close out, especially at low tide. This makes it an intermediate-to-advanced spot: comfortable body-dragging through shore break, water relaunch, and upwind riding are prerequisites. Strapless wave riding and freeride are the draw; true flatwater freestyle riders should look elsewhere (Essaouira bay or Dakhla). Total beginners are better off at sheltered Essaouira beach. Launch is straightforward off a long sandy beach with plenty of space, basic cafés/restaurants, showers and toilets; camping and surf/kite schools nearby. Access is by road from Essaouira (~30 min). Hazards: shore-break and currents/rip on bigger days, the reef near Marabout, rocks at the southern end, gusty/offshore conditions on the wrong wind, and shared water with surfers and swimmers — pick uncrowded sections and give surfers room. Cold Atlantic water year-round: wear a 3/2–4/3 wetsuit.
