About This Spot

A 40–45 km flatwater lagoon sheltered from the Atlantic by the Dakhla peninsula, edged by Saharan dunes — one of the most reliable wind destinations on earth, with 300–340+ kiteable days a year. Wind is thermal-reinforced NE trade, blowing side-shore (occasionally side-onshore, rarely S). Season runs roughly April–October; June–August is the heavy season with 90%+ windy days and gusts to 30–35 kt, while spring/autumn deliver steadier 18–24 kt. Winter (Dec–Feb) is the lightest but still ~50–60% reliable at 12–18 kt. Daily pattern: light mornings, filling in around midday and peaking after 2 pm. Water is flat to mildly choppy depending on wind and tide — glassiest at low tide, slightly more textured at high tide. The eastern 'Speed Spot' offers butter-flat, shallow water ideal for freestyle and speed runs. Skill level: excellent for beginners and improvers thanks to huge standing-depth shallows, flat water and onshore-component wind that drifts you back to the bank; equally a freestyle/freeride paradise for pros. Most riders base at one of the lagoon kite camps (PK25 area south of town); access otherwise is a 20–30 min drive from Dakhla city, often via hotel transfer (~€10/person) or rental car. Launch is off wide sandy/flat beach from the camps. Hazards: very shallow at low tide — watch for touching down, sandbars and the occasional shell/rock at the edges; tidal range grows around full/new moons and exposes or floods areas, so check tide before riding far. Summer wind can be gusty. Crowds build at the popular camps in peak season. It's remote desert: limited services, intermittent internet, strong sun and cool nights (shorty or 3/2 advised; water ~20–24°C). Nearby wave spot Oum Lamboiur (~30 min) works Oct–Mar for those wanting swell.
