About This Spot

East Cape town on the Sea of Cortez, one of Baja's two winter kite hubs (with La Ventana 60km north). Powered by the 'El Norte' — a NE/N thermal-and-pressure wind that builds across 500+ km of open sea, so it arrives steady and reliable. Season runs ~Nov 1 to end of March, peaking mid-December through mid-March; Dec–Feb are windiest. On a working day expect wind to fill mid-to-late morning, peak roughly 1–4pm at 15–30 kn (commonly 18–25 kn), and ease toward sunset — windy 4–5 days/week in peak, often quoted near 80% of days. May–Oct is light/variable and not worth a kite trip. Water is warm year-round (mid-70s°F / ~24–26°C even in January); most riders use a shorty or board shorts. Water state: protected bay near shore gives flat-to-moderate chop in the mornings and lighter wind; as the Norte builds and on bigger days the open Cortez kicks up organized rolling swell — fun ramps for jumping and downwinders, choppier the further out you go. The wind is side-/cross-onshore at the main launch, which keeps you blowing back to the beach rather than out to sea. Launch & access: the go-to spot is Playa Norte / North Beach at the north end of town — a long, shallow, sandy beach with clean side-onshore wind, plenty of room to rig, no current and few obstacles, making it genuinely beginner-friendly and home to several schools/rentals. Town is ~1 hr from Los Cabos (SJD) airport. Some beaches further from the bay (e.g. toward Punta Pescadero) have rockier/deep-water entries where booties help. Hazards: gusty/punchy wind on stronger Norte days; building afternoon swell and chop offshore; watch for rocks at non-sandy launches; shared water with windsurfers, wingers and a growing crowd at peak season, so keep lanes clear near the beach. No notably offshore wind at Playa Norte, but always check direction before launching elsewhere. Suits beginners (lessons) through advanced freeriders/freestyle and downwinders.
