Loreto

About This Spot

Loreto is a town on the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) side of Baja California Sur, and a marginal, opportunistic kite spot rather than a destination in its own right. Wind comes almost entirely from the winter 'El Norte' systems that funnel N/NW down the gulf, roughly mid-November through March, with the most usable window often Feburary through May. Crucially, Loreto sits north of La Ventana/Los Barriles and gets the same El Norte fronts but WITHOUT the strong thermal reinforcement those spots enjoy, so wind here is lighter, gustier and less dependable. Long-term Windfinder stats for Loreto airport average only ~8 kts (NE) with gusts to ~27 kts on frontal days; expect to wait for fronts and to rig big (12–16m, often a 16m or a directional/foilboard) on lighter days. When a norther fills in it tends to build through the afternoon, frequently peaking around 6pm. Water state: open gulf, so when it blows you get wind-chop and short swell rather than flat water; the offshore islands (Isla Coronado, Isla del Carmen) create both shelter and wind-shadow patches, making the wind field patchy. Launch & access: ride from town — drive to the end of the main street/malecón, turn right and park/rig in front of the hotel, or set up at the point a few hundred yards south. Easy car access and amenities in town. Skill level: best for independent intermediate-to-advanced kiters comfortable self-launching in gusty, variable wind and reading fronts; not a school/beginner progression spot, and there is no real kite-school scene. Hazards: inconsistent and gusty wind is the main risk, plus rocks/construction near the point, boat traffic from the marina, occasional N swell and current on frontal days, and cool winter water (a 3/2–4/3 wetsuit is wise). Bottom line: worth a session if you're already in Loreto, but travel to La Ventana for reliability.
