El Cuyo

About This Spot

El Cuyo is a quiet fishing village on Yucatán's north coast that has become a flat-water kite destination. Season runs roughly November–July; the most reliable stretch is February–May with steady side-onshore trades of ~16–24 knots (often 18–23kt) blowing NE/E. Wind is thermally reinforced: mornings start light and it typically fills in by early afternoon, building toward sunset, so daily wind on the forecast usually over-delivers. December–January brings 'El Norte' cold-front systems — stronger, gustier, more onshore winds, bigger swell and the occasional blown-out or cold day (a shorty/thermal top can be useful those months; Feb–May water and air are warm, boardshorts weather). Water state: predominantly flat to lightly choppy. The beach shelves out gently — shallow, chest-deep ~50–70m offshore — making it one of the better learner spots in Mexico. Side-onshore direction keeps you blowing back to the beach, so it's friendly for beginners and great for freeride/freestyle progression; intermediates love the long downwinders toward Las Coloradas (roughly 15–35km of mostly flat water with the odd clean ~1m wave). Launch is the long, white-sand main beach ('Kite Beach') west/east of town — wide, uncrowded, easy setup, minimal obstacles. Hazards: it's a low-key spot so crowds are rarely an issue, but the beach is open and exposed, downwinders commit you to open coast with limited rescue, and frontal-passage days can be squally and shifty. Watch for swimmers/fishing near town, occasional sargassum weed, and respect that El Cuyo borders the Ría Lagartos biosphere reserve (flamingos, protected dunes) — stay on designated beach areas. Access: ~2.5–3 hrs from Cancún or Mérida by car; no big resort scene, mostly small kite schools and guesthouses.
