Le Morne, on Mauritius' SW tip below the basalt Le Morne Brabant mountain, is one of the world's most complete kite spots: a huge flat-water lagoon and several world-class reef waves within a ~1-mile radius, so it suits everyone from first-timers to expert wave riders. Wind: SE trade winds (side/side-onshore from the left) blow most days April–November, the Mauritian winter, when 60% of days top Force 4. Best/most reliable is June–October, typically 15–30 kt and gusting to ~35 kt in peak Jun–Aug. The mountain accelerates the trades by ~5 kt over the lagoon. Dec–March is summer: lighter, less reliable, but thermal breezes (not always shown on forecasts) keep the south rideable; February is the dead month. Air 20–26°C in season, water warm year-round. Water & zones: The main 'Kite Lagoon'/Beginner Bay has a sandy bottom, knee-to-waist depth and flat water—ideal for learning and freestyle; flat to choppy depending on tide. Upwind/western lagoon is flat and open for intermediates (watch sandbars and coral heads; turtles/rays). Offshore reef passes are advanced-only: One Eye (steep, fast left over razor reef, ride at high tide, don't ride the lip), Manawa (bigger, less steep, deep channel) and Chameaux (A-frame, heavy lips). Launch & access: Launch from the public beach at Le Morne or via the area hotels; the sandy launch at 'the Point' is small, tree-lined and gusty—only for those confident to stay upwind. Schools operate on the lagoon. Hazards: Shallow razor-sharp coral, strong channel currents that pull you out to sea, and wind that can go offshore in the evening—boat rescue costs €100+. Reefs don't forgive mistakes; beginners must stay in the inner lagoon, and only experienced riders should attempt the passes. Can get crowded in peak season.
