About This Spot

Fulidhoo is a small inhabited local island on the eastern rim of Vaavu (Felidhoo) Atoll, central Maldives, ~59 km south of Malé. It's a flat-water destination rather than a wave spot: a large sandbank/lagoon system off the western side gives roughly 10 km² of shallow, turquoise flat water that mostly empties of stones near the sand, ideal for freestyle, foiling and progression. Wind: two monsoons. The main kite season is the SW monsoon 'Hulhangu' (May–Oct), with the steadiest thermals and SW–W winds averaging ~15–23 kt; expect glassy mornings, occasional no-wind days, and gustier, squally afternoons in the wettest months (Jun–Aug). The NE monsoon 'Iruvai' (roughly Dec–Mar) is drier and sunnier but generally lighter and more variable for kiting. Plan a 10–14 day window and bring a quiver (8–12 m) — wind here is good, not guaranteed. Warm water year-round, no wetsuit. Launch & access: most kiting is boat-based (liveaboard/kite safari or a host boat) launching off the western sandbank, which is best at low–mid tide when the bank is exposed for easy start/land; a beach launch from the island's bikini-beach side is also possible. Reaching Fulidhoo means the public ferry or a speedboat/seaplane transfer from Malé — there is no walk-on kite school, and Maldives kite infrastructure is thin (sport only took off after ~2016), so come self-sufficient or with a guided trip. Skill level: suits beginners to advanced thanks to the flat lagoon, but the lack of on-island rescue/rental and the need for boat support make it better for confident independent intermediates+. Hazards: coral reef and scattered coral fragments in the white sand (reef boots recommended); tidal current runs through the atoll channels (kanns) — stay over the bank and don't drift toward passes; light/no-wind days; few crowds. Respect local-island rules (bikinis only on the designated bikini beach, modest dress in the village, alcohol restrictions).
