Cherating

About This Spot

Cherating is a laid-back surf village on Peninsular Malaysia's east coast, ~30 km north of Kuantan, best known for the long left-hand point break at the river-mouth estuary. As a kite spot it is firmly seasonal and driven by the Northeast Monsoon (roughly late November–March, most reliable Dec–Feb). In that window expect side-onshore NE/E-NE wind, commonly 15–20 kt with stronger squally days pushing 25 kt during rain. A secondary SW-monsoon window (around June–September) is far lighter and inconsistent (10–15 kt, big-kite weather); outside these periods wind is unreliable, so plan travel around the NE monsoon. Water state in the windy season is NOT flat — it's chop with real swell, and the point can produce chest- to head-high waves. This makes Cherating an intermediate-to-advanced wave/freeride spot. The wind being side-onshore means waves push you back to the beach (forgiving for launching, less ideal for clean down-the-line riding). True beginners are better served at nearby Balok Beach (Kuantan), the region's main kite-school hub with flatter water and operators like Kiteboarding Malaysia; KamSurf has operated at Cherating itself. Launch & access: a wide, sandy, forgiving beach with easy launches and a short walk from village guesthouses/resorts; reach it by car or taxi (~40 min from Kuantan, ~4 hr from KL). Hazards: NE-monsoon weather brings heavy rain, gusty/squally winds and a punchy shorebreak; watch current and the channel near the Cherating river mouth/estuary, plus surfers and the point lineup. Bottom is sand (low cut risk, no major reef reported). Cherating is a turtle-conservation area (Chendor/Cherating) — be mindful near nesting beaches. Crowds are lighter than Balok, but weekends draw surfers and day-trippers.
