Sakalava Bay

About This Spot

One of the Indian Ocean's most reliable flatwater-and-wave spots, Sakalava (Baie de Sakalava) sits ~20 km south of Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) on Madagascar's far north tip. The ~5 km² bay is sheltered by a coral reef, giving a shallow, white-sand bottom and a side-onshore SE trade wind that consistently blows you back to the beach — making it one of the safest, most beginner-friendly spots anywhere, while still serving advanced riders. Season: SE trades blow mid-March to mid-December, ~95% reliable in peak months (in 2017 only 7 of 245 days were under 15 kt). Strength by month: Mar–Apr 12–25 kt; May–Jun 20–30 kt; Jul–Sep strongest at 25–35 kt (gusting 40, advanced only — bring small kites 7–9 m); Oct 20–30 kt; Nov–Dec 15–25 kt. Avoid Jan–Feb/early Mar (rainy/cyclone season). Water is warm, ~28°C, dropping to 23–25°C in Jul–Aug. Water state: mirror-flat over the sandbank/sandbar inside the bay (best for learning, freeride and freestyle); a reef wave breaks ~500 m offshore with 1–2.5 m faces for wave/foil riding. A sandbar to Nosy Tsara exposes at low tide as a rest/walk-out point — mind the tide. Skill: all levels; ideal for beginners and progressing intermediates, with reef waves for experts. Launch/access: wide beaches, plenty of rigging room, often uncrowded; reach it by 4x4 on a sandy track off the Diego–Ramena road, or stay at on-site lodges/schools (Ocean Lodge, KiteParadise, MadaKiteCamp) and rig steps from your room. Hazards: shallow coral reef (booties advised, watch shallow sections and rocks at low water); local fishermen and small boats in the bay; remote location with limited rescue — self-sufficiency matters. Wind is side-on (safe), not offshore. Crowds are minimal.
