About This Spot

Diani (and adjoining Galu Beach) is a long, palm-fringed white-sand strip on Kenya's south coast, protected by an offshore reef that creates a wide turquoise lagoon — one of East Africa's most reliable and beginner-friendly kite zones. Two trade-wind seasons: KASKAZI (NE, ~mid-Dec to mid-March) is the most popular — warm, steady 15-20kt that switches on around 10:30am and holds till evening, with the flattest water. KUSI/KUZI (SE/S, ~June to mid-Sept, sometimes from April) blows stronger and gustier, averaging 18-25kt, and pushes in swell of 1.5-3m on big days (June-Oct) — best for wave riders. Wind is predominantly side-shore, so a downwind drift carries you along the beach, not out to sea. April-May and Oct-Nov are low-wind/rainy shoulder months — avoid. Water state is tide-driven over the reef. The tidal range is large (up to ~4m on springs): at low-to-mid tide the lagoon is shallow and flat — ideal for learning, freestyle and foiling on sandbars (Galu/Pallet Cafe, Kenyaways, Neptune Sandbar). At high tide it gets deeper and choppier with a small shore break, and waves break out on the reef edge for directional riding (Galu Reef, Mlango, Neptune Channel). Huge launch space, sandy entry/exit, several IKO schools (H2O-Extreme, KiteMotion, Sons of Wind, Quest, Tribe) for gear/storage/rescue. Suits beginners to advanced. Skill all year, but downwinders and waves reward intermediates+ in Kusi. HAZARDS: at low tide the reef exposes coral, rocks, broken shells and sea urchins — reef boots strongly advised; mind boat moorings/anchors near Neptune Sandbar; respect swimmers and dhows at busy resort frontages. Conditions stay cross/side-shore at Diani itself, but nearby Tiwi Beach/rivermouth can go offshore and unpredictable — not for beginners. Watch the strong tidal currents through reef passes.
