About This Spot

Tanjung Bira sits at the southern tip of Bulukumba on South Sulawesi's SE peninsula — primarily a diving, white-sand beach and Phinisi boatbuilding town, NOT a developed kite destination. There is no kite school, rental or rescue here; the region's serviced, beginner-friendly kite spot (Jeneponto/Mallasoro, a ~2km flat lagoon) is roughly 70km west. Treat Bira as a self-sufficient, advanced-rider option only. Wind: the SE monsoon (southeast trade winds) blows in the dry season May–October, strongest and most reliable June–August — the same trade belt that powers Jeneponto, where afternoons regularly hit 20–35kt at peak. April–May and Sept–Oct are lighter, less reliable shoulder months; Nov–April is the wet NW monsoon and unreliable for kiting. Bira itself has no published spot data, so check Windguru/Windfinder (nearest useful models: Selayar, Bulukumba) before committing. Water & exposure: Bira faces the Flores Sea where the Gulf of Boni meets it, so expect open-ocean chop and building SE swell Jun–Aug — not the flatwater of Jeneponto's lagoon. A fringing coral reef lies close offshore in shallow, crystal-clear water. The main tourist beach faces roughly W/NW, so the prevailing SE wind is offshore to side-offshore there — a serious blow-out hazard toward Liukang Loe island and open sea. Seek an east- or south-facing stretch for side/onshore wind. Skill & hazards: experienced, independent riders only. Hazards include live coral reef (wear booties; beware shallow heads at low tide), strong tidal currents around the cape, heavy boat traffic (the Selayar car-ferry, dive boats and Phinisi), offshore wind on the main beach, swimmers and tourist crowds on Pantai Bira, and no on-water rescue. Bring all your own gear, a buddy and solid self-rescue skills.
