About This Spot

Sanur sits on Bali's calm southeast coast, the most reliable and beginner-friendly kite spot on the island. The riding takes place inside a long, reef-protected lagoon (~1 km wide, 7 km long) that delivers shallow, flat-to-lightly-chopped water — ideal for learning, freeriding, foiling and freestyle. Outside the reef there is open swell and reef waves (up to head-high+ on the left reef) for advanced riders who hire a boat/guide. Season: dry-season trade winds make May–September the window, with June–August the most consistent — expect cross/side-onshore E–SE wind roughly 10–20 kt most afternoons, building through the day. Wind here is often on the lighter, less steady side, so bring big kites (12–17 m) and a lightwind/foil board. Wet season (Dec–March) brings WSW wind that is cleaner cross-shore at the south (Mertasari) but generally gusty, side-offshore and unreliable — not a travel target. Launch & access: the main launch is Mertasari Beach in Semawang at Sanur's south end — a broad beach with grassy rigging area, parking, and several schools (e.g. Rip Curl School of Surf, Bali Kitesurfing School) offering lessons and rental. Taxi/scooter access is easy; ~15–20 min from Ngurah Rai airport. Hazards: strongly TIDE-DEPENDENT — only sail at/near high tide; the lagoon dries to sharp coral and becomes unrideable at low tide, so check tide tables and aim for the hours around high water. Watch for shallow coral, sea urchins (reef boots recommended), and current/wind shadow near the reef edge. In wet-season WSW the wind is offshore — only ride downwind toward town with safety cover. The launch can get crowded with school traffic, swimmers and paragliders. Warm water year-round (25–32°C), boardshorts only.
